Liebster Award – Ahhhh!

Hey beauties! I’m sorry I haven’t written lately, I’ve been on vacation and my schedule has been crazy. BUT I’m back with some exciting news – the lovely authors of Womanseekingmakeup and Shadow & Sugar have nominated me for the Liebster Award! I’m so honored and excited to be nominated – thanks ladies!

The rules of the award:
1. Link back to the person that nominated you
2. Answer the questions asked by the nominator
3. Nominate 11 other bloggers with less than 200 followers
4. Create 11 questions for your nominees
5. Notify all nominees on their blogs and/or social media

My questions from Womanseekingmakeup

1. What is your favorite new (or new to you) product?

Philosophy’s “Take a Deep Breath” moisturizer. I just started using it about a week ago and I’m obsessed. It gives the perfect amount of hydration without making my skin greasy.

2. Best makeup tip you ever received?

That blending is everything!

3. What is your current skincare routine?

Morning – Oxy 10% benzoyl peroxide face wash followed by the “Take a Deep Breath” moisturizer

Night – Oxy 10% followed by CeraVe PM moisturizer. After that sinks in, I use Tretinoin cream from my dermatologist to keep acne away.

4. What is one thing you do to keep healthy?

I pretty much don’t drink anything but water. Also, when the weather is nicer, I usually go for a run every day after work. (I haven’t gotten myself to go to the gym – well – ever.)

5. Favorite quote or life perspective?

“The key is to keep company only with people who uplift you, whose presence calls forth your best.”

6. What is one blog related pet peeve you have?

I don’t like the WordPress app for the iPhone, I think it’s set up in an odd way.

7. What is one fun or interesting fact about yourself?

I’m 22 years old but I’m still afraid of the dark when I’m alone. My imagination runs wild and I freak out – ridiculous, I know!

8. Any goals you are working on or have for this year?

A million! But one of the main ones is removing toxic people and situations from my life.

9. What’s your favorite recipe to share (and share it!)?

The most delicious Taco Dip:

Get a tub of sour cream and a package of cream cheese – mix equal parts of both together in a bowl until smooth. Place a layer (about an inch deep) of the mixture at the bottom of an oven-safe container or pan. Layer your favorite salsa on top, followed by shredded cheese. Bake it at 350 degrees until the cheese melts. Eat it with tortilla chips of course!

10. What’s the most interesting thing you’ve heard recently?

That Lady Gaga is going to star in the next season of American Horror Story!

11. Favorite movie?

It’s always been “My Best Friend’s Wedding.” I just love Julia Roberts too much for words.

My questions from Shadow & Sugar

1. What is one thing you wish you were more motivated to do?

Eat better! I love fruits and veggies and all that, but when I see chocolate or an ice cream cone…it’s all over.

2. What is the last book you read?

Gone Girl

3. What is your dream vacation?

I would absolutely love to go on a trip through Europe! I want to see Italy, France, Greece and Ireland.

4. Do you have a doppelgänger (look-alike)?

Not in my opinion, but I’ve been told that I look like a number of different actresses. I’ve gotten Winona Ryder, Jennifer Connelly, and Shailene Woodley (in her “Secret Life of the American Teenager) days. I’m super flattered by those comparisons, but I don’t really see it!

5. What is your favorite Disney movie?

I have to go with good old Toy Story.

6. What is the first thing you’d buy if you won the lottery?

Probably a beautiful apartment closer to my job. My commute right now is about 3 hours per day – ugh!

7. Who was your favorite teacher and why?

A Communication professor I had in college. He taught us all how to examine the world in a different way and really opened up our eyes to important world issues. I’m really grateful for that.

8. How many selfies do you have saved on your phone?

I just counted – 20 even. Most of them are from Instagram.

9. If you could live in a different era, what would it be?

Probably the early 1920’s – I’m a huge Great Gatsby and Downton Abbey fan!

10. Have you ever been in a car accident?

Yes, three actually. One of them was pretty scary and I had a concussion from it, but that was about 5 years ago.

11. What do you usually order at a restaurant?

It depends on the restaurant but I love steak!

GlamGlow SuperMud Clearing Treatment Review

Ahhhhh, facial masks. They always give me that fresh and clean feeling, like I’m giving my skin a do-over. But there’s one in particular that I can’t seem to stay away from.

GlamGlow SuperMud Clearing Treatment

IMG_8149

I’d heard wonderful things about this product, but one look at the price tag in Sephora and I practically laughed my way out the door. $70 for a little jar of “mud?” No thanks. A few months later, however, I was shopping at TJ Maxx and felt my jaw drop when I spotted the little silver jar in their beauty section. I have no idea how this good luck fell upon me, but I bought it at a discount and never looked back.

The Claims

“This formula was clinically developed by GLAMGLOW® dermatological chemists to help fight all common skin concerns including breakouts, discoloration, black and white heads, razor bumps, and in-grown hair. Powerful, skin-clearing mud visibly draws out dirt and congestion while a proprietary six-acid blend dramatically brightens and softens skin. It works to magnetically draw out dirt and pores with Activated-X Charcoal, leaving skin smooth and healthy-looking.” (www.sephora.com)

How I Use It

You’ll open the tub to find the product with a thick, almost gritty texture. The first time I used it, I put it all over my face…please don’t do that. So little of this beloved product is given to you for the price that what I’ve taken to doing is using it as a spot treatment. I place a thin layer of the mask over problem areas and watch the dark mud dry out and turn to a light gray color.

The Benefits

This treatment is the fastest-acting remedy for blemishes I’ve ever tried. It seems to absorb impurities and dramatically improves spots overnight. If you have problem with acne or impurities, GlamGlow is about to be your new best friend. I’ve struggled with acne for a long time and having this product in my skincare arsenal has given me peace of mind knowing that I can do something about it. I know the price is steep, but ask to try a sample at Sephora first and you’ll see why you should splurge!

Have you tried any other Glam Glow products? I’d love to hear about them, I’m very curious about the brand now!

Best Products for Oily Skin

If you have oily skin, trust me, I feel your pain. Sometimes all the blotting in the world can’t help you out and it’s just one big shine fest with makeup sliding off your face. Pretty picture, I know. But in my oily skin travels, I have found a few products that seem to improve the situation and keep me matte.

IMG_8131

  1. Bare Minerals Matte Loose Powder

Ilove this powder. It’s designed to work well with oily skin, it has medium coverage and its’ formula doesn’t break me out. Although it doesn’t keep me matte all day, I can usually go about 4 – 5 hours without blotting and it even seems to boost the clarity and overall texture of my skin. I’ve tried plenty of other powders, but I always find myself reaching for this one. I pair it with just concealer or even liquid foundation if I need extra coverage.

  1. Benefit POREfessional Primer

This primer is a godsend. Not only does it completely smooth out my skin, it also reduces shine. When I wear this under my makeup, blotting can be pushed off for an extra few hours and makeup application is a dream. I really like it because even though it offers a matte finish, it doesn’t accentuate or cause dry patches at all. The one thing I will say about this is that is has silicone in it, so I don’t like to wear it every single day for fear of clogged pores. You gotta let your skin breathe sometimes, ya know?

  1. Clinique Advanced Concealer

This was such a lucky find. I was in search of an oil-free concealer and I’d used Clinique’s products before, so I figured I’d give it a shot. Wow. It’s a completely matte concealer, doesn’t crease, has amazing coverage and it’s extremely smooth and blendable. The only reason it’s not my all-time favorite is because it does highlight and cause dryness. But if you rarely get dry patches, you NEED this in your life. Seriously.

  1. Beauty Blender

I actually use the Real Techniques version of the beauty blender. But if you’re a liquid foundation kind of gal, try applying it with a damp beauty blender. It offers smoother, fuller coverage and somehow mattifies almost any foundation I’ve tried. It’s like magic.

What are your favorite products for oily skin? I’d love to try some new ones!

4 Tips for Stressing Less

legs-434918_640

Stress. We all deal with it at one point or another. Or if you’re like me, you deal with it every day. But we can’t let stress take over and ruin that pretty skin of ours now can we? Here are my best tips for giving tension the boot:

Gain some perspective

Is this something that’s going to matter a week from now? How about a year from now? Ten years? Chances are that the situation you’re so worried about isn’t the end of your world. Yes, that project your boss handed over to you may seem like the be all and end all of your career, but it’s not. Yes, that guy not texting you might seem like the end of your dating life, but really he’s just a jerk who you probably shouldn’t be dating anyway. Take stock of what’s going on and put it into perspective. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by how little most things actually matter.

Treat yo’ self

If you can’t seem to relax, the least you can do is be nice to yourself. Try a day filled with Gilmore Girls and your favorite foods. Or treat yourself to a night out on the town with your girlfriends. Have you been coveting that sweater hanging in Express? Girl, go get that sweater! Do one really nice thing for yourself and let those blues melt away.

Get a little more oxygen

A deep breath in, now out. Ahhh, now doesn’t that feel better? Taking ten (slow!) deep breaths when you’re stressed will carry more oxygen to the brain and allow you to think more clearly. It’ll also take your mind off of your problems by refocusing your attention to the present moment.

 Turn on Kevin Hart

It doesn’t have to be Kevin Hart, but watch something that makes you laugh. Really laugh. Usually Kevin Hart’s stand-up or Youtube “scare cam” videos will do the trick for me. Laughing will help get your mind off stressors and it’ll pump you up with endorphins (*quick side note: dark chocolate does the same thing – hell yeah).

What tricks do you use to chill out when stress tries to take over?

How To Get Longer Eyelashes

IMG_7610.JPG

I’ve always had naturally long lashes. I consider them a gift when I’m applying makeup and a curse when the little rascals fall directly into my eyes. But I stand before you today – a mascara connoisseur – proud to say that I’ve found what I believe to be the best mascara combination on this side of the beauty blogosphere. Oh – and did I mention you can find them all at the drugstore? *Swoon*

Step 1: L’Oreal’s Voluminous Mascara

This little love plumps your lashes and provides a natural-looking boost that gets them headed in the right direction. Your lashes will look fuller and thicker in just a couple of swipes. Apply 2 – 3 coats all over your eyelashes.

Step 2: CoverGirl’s Clump Crusher Mascara by LashBlast

Wait about 20 seconds for the L’Oreal coat to set (you don’t want it to be dry, just a bit tacky) and then apply 3 coats. This mascara actually makes me giddy. We’re having a love affair, she and I. She’ll separate and lengthen your lashes smoothly and easily, leaving NO clumps behind. None.

Step 3: Maybelline’s The Rocket Volum’ Express Mascara

Again, wait about 20 seconds for the last coats to set and then apply 2 coats of this to the outer corners of your lashes. It will bring further volume to the edges, while simultaneously blending the look together. It ends up creating a “flick” or cat-eye effect without any eyeliner at all.

Step 4: Bat your lashes at every guy that walks by. Actually, don’t. That’s awkward. Bat them at yourself in the mirror instead.

I’d love to know which mascaras have worked best for you guys. I might try switching one out if you have suggestions!

Tarte’s Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Full Coverage Foundation Review

IMG_7556.JPG

I figured I’d start out the beauty section by talking about a product that’s near and dear to me. Ah yes – it’s Tarte’s Amazonian Clay Foundation and it’s beautiful. Just look at it, people.

Why I Tried It

I first tried this foundation about a year and half ago when I had acne scarring that I wanted covered. I was drawn to it because it was full coverage and oil-free, so I knew it wouldn’t break me out any more than I already had been. It also claimed to give a satin-matte finish, which is exactly what I needed for my annoyingly oily skin.

Why I Love It

I remember the relief I felt went I first applied this with my fingertips because it was so smooth and it had such great coverage. I had been struggling with acne for about a year and although my complexion had started to clear, I was always left with unsightly post-acne marks that I could never quite seem to cover. This foundation blurred my acne marks perfectly and fit my skin tone to a T (I’m a fair-neutral tone, so I went with “Fair Beige”).

One thing I particularly love about this foundation (and Tarte’s line in general) is that it’s something I don’t feel guilty about putting on my skin. There are many foundations out there that I can’t wait to wash off at night, but this foundation is made with vitamins and minerals to boost your complexion instead of chemicals and oils that can harm it.

Drawbacks

It doesn’t necessarily keep me matte all day; a bit of shine usually pokes through within a couple of hours. To be honest, though, most products that can keep me matte also end up causing dryness and flaking that I find to be much more unflattering that a bit of shine that can be blotted away.

In It For The Long Haul, Baby

All in all, I absolutely adore this foundation. It doesn’t cause breakouts, it wears very nicely, it seems to balance my skin, and it’s true to its full-coverage claims.

Let me know if you’ve tried this product and how it worked for you!
